Baking With Jane: Green & Gold Cookies

If you know Jane, you know how much she loves to bake! This recipe combines two of the things she loves most: being in the kitchen and being at camp! If you try this recipe for Green & Gold Cookies, be sure to let us know so we can share your photos on social media!

Ingredients:

1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
10 Tbsp. unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg at room temperature
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/3 cup full-fat sour cream at room temperature

For the icing:

5 and 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted (measure before sifting)
7 Tbsp. whole milk, divided
2 Tbsp. light corn syrup
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
Green and yellow food coloring

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  2. Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a medium bowl. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl using a handheld or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugar together on medium-high speed until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes.
  4. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and beat on high speed until combined, about 1 minute. Scrape down the sides and up the bottom of the bowl and beat again as needed to combine.
  5. Reduce to low speed and add the dry ingredients in three additions, alternating with the sour cream. Beat everything on low until combined and no pockets of flour remain. The batter will be very thick!
  6. Using a greased 1/4-cup dry measuring cup, drop mounds of dough 4 inches apart on prepared baking sheets, 6 cookies per sheet.
  7. Bake for 16-18 minutes or until the edges are lightly browned. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before icing.
  8. Make the icings: Whisk the confectioners’ sugar, 6 tablespoons of milk, the corn syrup, vanilla extract, and salt together in a medium bowl.
  9. Transfer 1 cup to a separate bowl and add the tablespoon of milk and the green food coloring. Whisk until combined.
  10. Mix the yellow food coloring with the remaining batter.
  11. Spread green icing onto half of the cookies– the flat side. Refrigerate for 15 minutes or until set so that the icings do not bleed into each other.
  12. Spread yellow icing onto the other side and allow the icing to set completely, about 1 hour, before serving.

Big News From Cabin Row

Why We Can’t Wait For Summer 2021

Our leadership staff is always happy to get back to camp — but this year, after such a long time apart, their excitement is through the roof! We asked them to share what they’re most looking forward to about returning to Bryn Mawr this summer. We bet you can relate to the anticipation that they are feeling!

Eliza:
“I just can’t wait to be back at camp – back at my favorite place! There is no other way to say it. I am looking forward to all of the camp traditions and being back with our camp family. I am always excited for camp, but this year, there are no words to describe that level of excitement!”

Tanya:
“I can’t wait to be back at camp hearing the cheering in the dining hall, the campers’ laughter down Cabin Row, and the serenity of the Alma Mater after evening activities. Summer 2021 will be something truly special and I’m excited to be back with my camp family enjoying the fresh mountain air!”

Joe:
“I’m looking forward to reuniting with so many friends and to hearing about all that has gone on in their lives in different parts of the country.”

Max:
“I am excited for camp this summer because I can’t wait to see how much our girls have GROWN UP since we saw them last.  And I can’t wait to hear all the exciting things they have been up to. I am excited for camp this summer because I love being with my LBMC family, and I have missed them so much.”

Emily:
“I’m excited because the farm is not the same without forty horses to greet me every morning.  I’m also excited to see the progress of all my Riding Camp and LBMC riders over the past year!”

Becky:
“I’m excited to have everyone see all the renovation projects around camp and get back to having fun in our favorite summer place!”

Meryl:
“Spirit and tradition. Seeing girls come together after being apart for so long.”

Bill:
“I am very excited to return to camp in the summer of 2021 so that I may finally witness Bunk One summer 2020 get the opportunity to graduate from camp at camp.”

Liz:
“I want all the fresh air and to get back to dancing at my second home! And of course, gimme all the s’mores.”

Peter:
“I am excited for camp more than ever this year because I miss all the campers so much and I cannot wait to see how much growth they had since 2019.”

Lacy:
“I am excited to be back at camp more than ever to celebrate my 16th summer with my summer family!”

Jocelyn:
“I miss being with our camp family. I can’t wait to be outside in the fresh air all day and hear girls cheering, bunk doors closing, announcements over the loudspeaker — my sounds of summer!”

What are you most looking forward to this summer? Let us know on Facebook or Instagram!

Tradition Time With Eliza!

Angel Ceremony

“Tears that Angels Cry” is a song you might go your whole life without hearing if not for Bryn Mawr. To the Bryn Mawr family, it only takes three notes of the song to know what is happening: The Angel Ceremony.

Eliza Kagan as a Bunk One Camper at Lake Bryn Mawr Camp, showing off her angel necklace with a bunkmate
That’s me on the left, minutes after getting my angel!

One of the most special traditions at Bryn Mawr is our Angel Ceremony. In Bunk One, each camper receives a silver angel. Dan always starts this ceremony by saying that the value of the angel is not in the silver, it is an intrinsic value — the symbolism that connects you to Bryn Mawr, your camp memories and all former and future angels. Each year, this sentence brings more and more meaning to me.

The angel that I received when I was in Bunk One connects me to my camp friends and my memories as a camper, but also to all other alumni that I have come across in different paths of life since finishing camp. Bryn Mawr is the most special connection, and each and every time I see a former Angel, I feel special to be a part of this giant family!

Over the years, the symbolism of my own angel has come full circle. Since returning to LBMC as a member of the staff, having the opportunity to give a new group of Bunk One girls their angels has been extremely special for me. My angel not only connects me to my friends and my experience, but to the girls that experience that same Bunk One magic each and every year. I am counting the days until I am on that stage, Dan and Jane cue the music, and we can give the ’20-’21 Super Seniors their angels.

Love,
Eliza

Big News From Cabin Row

Welcome to the Poplar Posts!

After decades in publication, this year the Poplar Post is officially going digital!

This year has been challenging for all of us, but if there’s one thing that camp has taught us (besides the Angel Code, the value of friendship, and the words to countless songs and cheers), it’s that a tough challenge has the potential to bring out the best in each of us. We didn’t get to spend our summer together at camp this year, so we’re meeting that challenge with innovation!

While we are socially distanced, we’re going to make even more of an effort to ensure that we stay socially connected. Taking the Poplar Post online means we can publish more often and include more fun elements, like this video from Jane and Dan:

Now here’s our challenge to you: Find one new way to stay connected to your camp friends this winter! Here are just a few suggestions:

  • Turn some of your favorite camp photos into postcards and mail them to your friends
  • Schedule an all-bunk afternoon “rest hour” videoconference
  • Meet up for a hike or other safe outdoor activity (remember to maintain distance and mask up!)
  • Coordinate a craft, book or friendship bracelet swap by mail (if you’re looking for inspiration, how cool is this rainbow craft swap?

Send your updates and post ideas to Eliza for inclusion in a future Poplar Post!

Be sure to add the Poplar Post blog to your bookmarks, and make sure your parents have their Campanion app notifications turned on so you’ll be the first to know when there’s new content to check out!

Camper News

Goodbye Bunk 22, Hello Swings!

It’s been a sunny and busy fall season at camp!

Every year, our year-round crew makes the most of the beautiful Poconos autumn to get as much work done as they can before winter sets in. This year has been no different! They have been busy this fall replacing exterior siding on Bunk 1, Bunk 2, the Lodge and the Manor House.

But the biggest change is happening in Junior Camp, where we have something exciting happening! Bunk 22 has been used over the years as an infirmary, a camper cabin, and staff housing, and after a long life, this fall it was torn down to make room for something we think you’ll really enjoy… a new swing set!

Next summer, the Lower Juniors’ area will have a fresh new look and a beautiful new play area to enjoy during free time. We can’t wait to see the smiles on your faces when you see this special new spot on Cabin Row!
